Meta-owned WhatsApp is taking its video call features a step further by introducing filters and augmented reality (AR) effects to its native camera. Initially rolled out for video calls in April, these filters are now available for photos and videos captured directly within the app.
According to update tracker WABetaInfo, this new feature has been spotted in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android (version 2.24.20.20), now accessible on the Google Play Store. A new filter button has been integrated into the camera interface, allowing users to easily apply various filters with a single tap. Previously exclusive to video calls, these effects can now be applied in real-time as users prepare to take photos or record videos. Notably, one of the filters includes a skin-smoothing option aimed at enhancing image quality.
In addition to the filter capabilities, WhatsApp has introduced a background-changing feature that was once limited to video calls. Users can now swap their real-world backgrounds for virtual scenes or opt to fully blur their surroundings, achieving a more polished look. The camera also includes lighting adjustments, such as a low-light mode that enhances visibility in dim environments, ensuring clearer photos and videos under challenging conditions.
Currently, this new filter feature is being rolled out to select beta testers who have the latest version of WhatsApp for Android installed. A broader release is expected in the coming weeks. Additionally, WhatsApp has recently introduced an advanced search functionality for its Channels feature, enabling users to explore content across seven categories: People, Organizations, Lifestyle, Sports, Entertainment, Businesses, and News & Information.
