Chappell Roan, the rising pop star who gained significant attention over the summer, has canceled two major festival performances this weekend in New York and Columbia, Maryland, citing the need to prioritize her health amid overwhelming pressures.
The abrupt decision comes after a challenging few weeks for Roan, marked by confrontations over aggressive fan behavior, a heated exchange with a photographer at the MTV Video Music Awards, and scrutiny regarding her political views as the 2024 presidential election approaches.
In an Instagram Story posted Friday, Roan expressed her need to step back: “I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform. Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks, and I really feel it. I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding.”
The All Things Go festival also expressed its disappointment in a statement, emphasizing support for artists prioritizing their well-being.
Roan, who released her first EP in 2017, faced setbacks after being dropped by her label in 2020 but saw her career take off with the hit “Good Luck, Babe!” Following a standout performance at Coachella in April, her audience size has surged into the tens of thousands.
Her upcoming performance at Forest Hills Stadium was set to be her largest concert in New York since June’s Governors Ball. However, recent comments in an interview with The Guardian drew criticism, particularly her reluctance to endorse a candidate in the upcoming presidential race. Roan emphasized the need for critical thinking and the importance of voting, declaring the rights of transgender individuals as her primary election issue. After facing backlash, she clarified in TikTok videos that she would support Vice President Kamala Harris despite her concerns about the current administration’s policies.
Looking ahead, Roan has upcoming tour dates scheduled in Franklin, Tennessee, Rogers, Arkansas, and Council Bluffs, Iowa, before performing at the Austin City Limits festival.
