Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Alyssa Sutherland lead the cast of “The Room Below,” a psychological creature thriller currently filming in Sydney, Australia. The film is directed and written by Kurt Martin, known for his work on “Moon Rock for Monday,” and is produced by Byron Bay-based Lunar Pictures.
In “The Room Below,” the story follows Mia, an expectant mother and successful author of children’s books, who experiences eerie occurrences in her home after a boy resembling her deceased son goes missing. As Mia grapples with her grief, her erratic behavior catches the attention of a retired detective determined to uncover the truth behind the boy’s disappearance.
Rhys Meyers, an Ireland-born actor celebrated for roles in “Velvet Goldmine,” “The Tudors,” and “Dracula,” is joined by Sutherland, known for her performances in “Vikings” and “Evil Dead Rise.” The cast also features Bobby Gilchrist from “Shapeless” and Gilbert Bradman of “Transfusion.”
“This film is a deeply intense psychological thriller exploring themes of grief, guilt, and obsession, with a uniquely unsettling creature that heightens the scares,” Martin shared. “I’m thrilled to work alongside such a talented cast and crew.”
Martin, who initially trained as a lawyer, has built an extensive career in directing and producing short films. His debut feature “Moon Rock for Monday” was well-received, securing distribution deals and nominations at various festivals.
“The Room Below” is produced by Jim Robison for Lunar Pictures, alongside Chris Chard for CME and Ty Linegar for MIK Studio. Executive producers include Marc Furmie, William Ramsey, and actress Jaime King, among others. The film also benefits from the expertise of Make Up Effects Group, renowned for their special effects work on projects like “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” and “Talk to Me.” As of now, no sales agent or North American distributor has been announced for the film.
