David Korins, renowned scenic designer for “Hamilton,” “Beetlejuice,” and “Dear Evan Hansen,” is set to launch an exhibition titled “Stages of Imagination: The Iconic Broadway Designs of David Korins” at the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures in Tucson, Arizona.
Opening this weekend and running through May 31, 2025, the exhibition offers an immersive experience into Korins’ artistic process. Korins, who has contributed to projects like the Academy Awards and “Mrs. Doubtfire,” expressed excitement about the opportunity to delve into five distinct musicals, including “Hamilton,” “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Beetlejuice,” “The Who’s Tommy,” and “Here Lies Love.”
Korins collaborated closely with directors, actors, and writers for the exhibition, emphasizing the collective effort behind set design. “There’s no such thing as set design by David Korins. It’s hundreds of people making thousands of decisions,” he noted, highlighting the teamwork involved in creating the final product.
The exhibition will feature original models, sketches, and paint elevations that reveal how scripts are transformed into Broadway spectacles. Korins will showcase personal notes from “Hamilton” and his original sketch for “Dear Evan Hansen,” which played a pivotal role in its development.
Korins hopes the exhibition will inspire visitors, stating, “These models are tools for communication that tell some of the most important thematic stories of a generation.” The exhibition will also include Korins’ residency, featuring master classes, design workshops, and symposia for the public and design students.
