Elon Musk’s social media platform X has appointed a legal representative in Brazil as part of efforts to comply with the country’s legal requirements and address demands from its top court. On Friday, the firm’s lawyers, Andre Zonaro and Sergio Rosenthal, announced that Rachel de Oliveira Conceicao will serve as the legal representative, a necessary step for X to continue its operations in Brazil. They have submitted her name to the Supreme Court.
Under Brazilian law, foreign companies must designate a local legal representative who assumes legal responsibilities within the country. X previously had a legal representative until mid-August when it opted to close its Brazilian offices. Following this closure, the Supreme Court ordered mobile and internet service providers to block access to X, resulting in users being cut off shortly after the announcement, due to the absence of a new representative.
The ongoing situation stems from a protracted dispute between Musk and Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes over X’s failure to comply with court orders aimed at curbing hate speech on the platform. The courts have taken measures to block accounts associated with the spread of misinformation and hate speech, which Musk has criticized as censorship.
On Thursday, X’s legal team indicated that the platform would begin complying with court orders related to content removal, fulfilling another requirement set by the Supreme Court.
