Netflix has resumed production on Season 2 of its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender, revealing that Miya Cech has been cast as Toph, a beloved character from the original series. A clip showcased during Netflix’s Geeked Week event features a close-up of Toph’s feet as she demonstrates her earthbending skills.
Seventeen-year-old Cech is recognized for her role as the younger version of Ali Wong’s character in the Netflix romantic comedy Always Be My Maybe (2019) and also appeared as a younger version of Wong’s character in the series Beef. Additionally, she starred in Nickelodeon’s The Astronauts and had a role in last year’s coming-of-age comedy You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah.
Toph, who was introduced in Book 2 of the original animated series, was born blind to a wealthy family and uses her earthbending abilities to navigate the world around her. She joins Aang and his friends on their quest to master the elements and confront the Fire Lord.
Netflix renewed the live-action series for two additional seasons shortly after the first season’s premiere. The adaptation is set to conclude with its third season. Returning cast members include Gordon Cormier, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, Dallas Liu, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, and Daniel Dae Kim.
After the departure of showrunner Albert Kim in April, Christine Boylan and Jabbar Raisani will take over as executive producers, with Kim remaining an executive producer. The production team also includes Dan Lin, Lindsey Liberatore, and Michael Goi, who directed the first two episodes of Season 1, while Raisani directed episodes three and four, and Roseanne Liang and Jet Wilkinson directed the latter episodes.
