The Sun Valley Film Festival will officially shift its dates from March to December starting in 2025, aiming to establish itself as a key player on the awards circuit. To celebrate this transition, the festival will host a special two-day SVFF Winter Screening Series on December 6-7, 2025.
Executive director Teddy Grennan explained that the festival’s original March timing was intended to boost tourism during a quieter season. However, with the success of past winter screenings and an increasingly competitive festival landscape in spring, the team recognized an opportunity to better serve the film industry by showcasing high-caliber films to influential audiences, including local guild and Academy members ahead of awards voting.
Director Sean Baker, whose film “The Florida Project” was featured in last year’s Winter Screening Series, emphasized the value of this exposure for independent filmmakers. “The Sun Valley Film Festival will always hold a special place for me,” Baker noted, recalling his 2013 Vision Award. “Their move to December will be beneficial for the film community.”
Festival director Candice Pate highlighted Sun Valley’s unique appeal, combining Hollywood roots with a relaxed mountain atmosphere. The festival aims to attract top events, including the World Cup, while spotlighting awards season contenders to its sophisticated audience.
This year’s Winter Screening Series will precede the Academy Award shortlist voting on December 9 and will include notable past screenings like “The Color Purple” and “Free Solo,” which won the 2019 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
Chris Albert, former head of marketing and communications for National Geographic, praised the festival as an ideal venue for press, influencers, and AMPAS voters, suggesting it is now a must-stop for awards contenders.
In addition to the Winter Screening Series, the festival will maintain its Monthly Movies series and continue year-round programs, including SVJr Film, Shop Talks, and the Screenwriter Lab Residency. Passes and tickets for the 2024 Winter Screening Series will be available later this year.
