More than a year after Paul Reubens’ passing, fans and friends gathered to celebrate his legacy with a special screening of “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” (1985) at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, marking the end of Cinespia’s Summer 2024 season. The event was a tribute to the actor’s beloved character and featured surprise appearances from Reubens’ co-stars Diane Salinger and E.G. Daily, as well as the film’s composer Danny Elfman and producer Richard Gilbert Abramson, who also served as Reubens’ manager.
The evening began with Fred Armisen introducing Tony Hawk, who shared heartfelt memories of his friendship with Reubens. Hawk recalled Reubens’ unique tradition of sending humorous “birthday bomb texts” and a touching personal message he received in his final months. Hawk emphasized Reubens’ impact on preserving childhood wonder and joy, stating, “What he provided, what he’s done with his art is such a gift to all of us.”
Diane Salinger, who played Simone in “Pee-wee’s Big Adventure,” attended the screening for the third time but noted it was the first without Reubens. Holding a vintage Pee-wee doll, she led a moment of silence in his memory and reflected on their time together.
E.G. Daily, who portrayed Dottie, expressed her gratitude for being part of such a magical film and the lasting bond she felt with Reubens. “Once you’re in the little Paul world, he’s your friend forever,” she said.
Danny Elfman, who scored the film, spoke about Reubens’ significant influence on his career. Elfman revealed that Reubens recommended him to director Tim Burton, a pivotal moment that shaped his career. “Paul changed my life,” Elfman said, acknowledging his role in launching his film scoring career.
Mark Mothersbaugh, composer for “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” and Devo singer, shared his personal experiences, noting Reubens’ thoughtful gestures and unwavering support. “He was just always a good man,” Mothersbaugh said. “I’m just happy we can be here to celebrate him.”
Paul Reubens passed away at age 70 on July 30, 2023, following a private battle with acute myelogenous leukemia. In a final message, he expressed gratitude for the love and support from his fans, saying, “I have always felt a huge amount of love and respect from my friends, fans, and supporters. I have loved you all so much and enjoyed making art for you.”
