Paramount Pictures has secured “September 5,” a historical thriller centered on the 1972 Munich Olympic hostage crisis, for a strategic awards season release. The film, which generated significant buzz on the festival circuit, will debut in select theaters on November 27 before expanding nationwide in December.
Following its well-received screenings at the Venice and Telluride film festivals, “September 5” is poised to be a significant contender in the upcoming awards season. Directed by Tim Fehlbaum and featuring a notable cast including Peter Sarsgaard, John Magaro, Ben Chaplin, and Leonie Benesch, the film provides a gripping account of the ABC Sports team that covered the terrorist attack during the Summer Olympics in Germany. It explores the intense decisions faced by the broadcasting team as they reported live on the hostage situation involving Israeli athletes.
Variety’s Peter Debruge commended “September 5” for its portrayal of how the crisis “forever changed TV news” and noted its timely relevance amid the ongoing Israel-Palestine conflict, which has seen renewed tensions following the October 7 attack last year.
Originally holding global rights to “September 5” before its Venice premiere, Paramount’s acquisition label, Republic Pictures, decided to fully acquire the film following its festival success. The Hollywood Reporter was first to report on the acquisition and the film’s release schedule. Paramount’s upcoming film slate for the year also includes the animated feature “Transformers One” (September 20), the horror sequel “Smile 2” (October 18), Ridley Scott’s “Gladiator II” (November 22), and the Robbie Williams biopic “Better Man” (December 25).
Produced by Germany’s BerghausWöbke Filmproduktion and Projected Picture Works, “September 5” boasts an impressive production team including Sean Penn, Philipp Trauer, Thomas Wöbke, Tim Fehlbaum, John Ira Palmer, and John Wildermuth.
