In a significant development for satellite TV enthusiasts, Walt Disney and DirecTV have reached an agreement in principle to restore programming to DirecTV’s more than 11 million subscribers. The deal, announced on Saturday, resolves a dispute that had left DirecTV customers without access to popular Disney-owned networks since September 1.
The blackout had deprived DirecTV subscribers of key programming, including college football on ESPN and the US Open tennis tournament. Additionally, viewers missed out on high-profile events such as the US presidential debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and Republican candidate Donald Trump, broadcast on ABC.
The new agreement not only reinstates access to ABC, ESPN, and other Disney networks but also expands DirecTV’s programming options. Subscribers will now benefit from multiple genre-specific packages, including those tailored to sports, entertainment, kids, and family programming. Furthermore, Disney’s streaming services—Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN+—will be incorporated into select DirecTV packages, enhancing the value and diversity of content available to viewers.
In a joint statement, the companies highlighted their long-standing partnership and commitment to providing top-notch entertainment to consumers. “DirecTV and Disney have a long-standing history of connecting consumers to the best entertainment,” the statement read. “This agreement furthers that commitment by recognizing both the tremendous value of Disney’s content and the evolving preferences of DirecTV’s customers.”
The resolution of the dispute comes just in time for the Emmy Awards broadcast on ABC, which is anticipated to be a major event for Disney. The media giant is expected to achieve historic gains, thanks to its highly nominated series including “Shogun,” “The Bear,” and “Only Murders in the Building.”
Vince Torres, DirecTV’s Chief Marketing Officer, noted that the programming blackout had been detrimental to the company, affecting subscriber satisfaction and potentially leading to losses. Speaking at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia + Technology Conference in San Francisco, Torres emphasized the importance of resolving the impasse.
With this new deal, DirecTV subscribers can look forward to regaining access to their favorite Disney content and a broader selection of programming, ensuring a more comprehensive and engaging viewing experience.
