In a contentious development, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has pledged to conduct mass deportations of Haitian immigrants from Springfield, Ohio. This statement comes amidst a surge of attacks and threats targeting the Haitian community in the city.

Trump’s announcement, made during a press conference at his golf resort in Rancho Palos Verdes, California, marks a significant escalation in the rhetoric surrounding immigration. His remarks followed a series of false claims circulated on social media, alleging that Haitian immigrants were involved in the bizarre act of eating household pets—a claim that has been widely discredited and mocked.

The Haitian community in Springfield, which numbers around 15,000, includes a significant portion of individuals who are in the country legally. Trump’s promise to conduct mass deportations typically targets those who are undocumented, but the inflammatory nature of his rhetoric has exacerbated tensions in the city.

The situation in Springfield has escalated to the point where two elementary schools were evacuated and a middle school was closed on Friday due to anonymous bomb threats. This marks the second consecutive day of threats against the community, highlighting the increasing volatility of the situation.

In response to the growing unrest, President Joe Biden has condemned the attacks on the Haitian community, calling for an end to the violence and hate. “It’s simply wrong. There’s no place in America. This has to stop—what he’s doing. It has to stop,” Biden stated at the White House.

City officials and community leaders have expressed concern that Trump’s rhetoric could incite further violence and put lives at risk. Springfield’s mayor, Rob Rue, emphasized the need for support rather than hostility, while city spokesperson Karen Graves noted that there have been no credible reports of attacks involving animals, although some residents have been victims of theft.

The ongoing dispute underscores the deepening divide over immigration policy in the U.S. and the challenges faced by communities grappling with heightened tensions and misinformation
