John Cena recently discussed his involvement in the marketing campaign for Supercell’s mobile game “Brawl Stars,” which is collaborating with Nickelodeon’s “SpongeBob SquarePants” to celebrate the cartoon’s 25th anniversary.
Despite the unconventional pairing, Cena explained to Variety that his deep passion for mobile gaming and his background in WWE make him a fitting choice for the “SpongeBob” promotion. “Honestly, I don’t think it’s weird at all,” Cena said. “SpongeBob is talked about on social media almost every four seconds. It’s a character that resonates across generations. Even though I’ve never been in the ‘SpongeBob’ world, both SpongeBob and WWE have universal appeal. It’s humor that works for both kids and adults, so there are more similarities than one might think.”
Frank Keienburg, General Manager of the “Brawl Stars” brand at Supercell, emphasized that the collaboration aims to celebrate the nostalgia and appeal of both brands. “SpongeBob SquarePants has a history of featuring celebrities, and we wanted to add another unexpected layer to our partnership. John Cena is a long-time fan of Supercell games and is beloved by our fans,” Keienburg said.
Cena teased exciting updates for “Brawl Stars” fans. “For the next month, ‘Brawl Stars’ will be transformed by the SpongeBob universe,” he revealed. “New challenges, new power-ups, and a whole new gameplay experience await.”
While promoting the “Brawl Stars” crossover, Cena is also working on Season 2 of James Gunn’s “Peacemaker” but remains tight-lipped about the plot or release date. “We’re making progress,” Cena noted cautiously. “I’m very happy with how things are going, and I hope that shows in the final product.”
Cena also addressed the delay caused by the changes in leadership at DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran. “James and Peter called me to explain that they want to do things right, even if it takes a bit longer,” Cena said. “It’s been a long wait, but filming is underway, and it feels like Season 2 will be here before we know it.”
