President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have issued strong statements condemning the recent tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, which left two students and two teachers dead and nine others injured. The shooting, carried out by a 14-year-old gunman named Colt Gray, has ignited renewed calls for comprehensive gun control measures.
Biden’s Response
In a statement released by the White House and shared on X, President Biden expressed profound sorrow over the incident, highlighting the growing concern about gun violence in American schools. “What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart,” Biden said. He criticized the normalization of such violence, emphasizing that students across the country are learning to protect themselves rather than focusing on their education.
Biden reiterated his commitment to addressing gun violence, pointing to legislative efforts such as the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which he described as the “most meaningful gun safety bill in decades.” He called for further action from Congress, including a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines, universal background checks, safe storage requirements, and the end of immunity for gun manufacturers. “These measures will not bring those who were tragically killed today back, but it will help prevent more tragic gun violence from ripping more families apart,” Biden added.
Harris’s Condemnation
Vice President Harris also condemned the violence in a post on X. “Today, Doug and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short by gun violence at Apalachee High School in Georgia,” Harris wrote. She extended her condolences to the affected students, teachers, and families and expressed gratitude to the first responders and law enforcement officers involved. Harris described the shooting as a “senseless tragedy” and called for an end to the epidemic of gun violence in the country, stressing that “it does not have to be this way.”
The Shooter and Victims
Colt Gray, who is now in custody, faces murder charges as an adult, according to Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey. The deceased victims have been identified as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, and 14-year-old students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo.
