Netflix is moving forward with a sequel series to the beloved drama “One Tree Hill,” as confirmed by Variety sources.

The new series will see original stars Sophia Bush, Hilarie Burton, and Daneel Ackles return as executive producers. Ackles will produce under her Chaos Machine banner alongside her husband, Jensen Ackles. Becky Hartman-Edwards, known for her work on “Firefly Lane” and “Parenthood,” is set to write and executive produce the series. Warner Bros. Television, which was behind the original show, will also produce the sequel.

Bush and Burton are expected to reprise their iconic roles, with Ackles in discussions to return as well. However, it remains unclear whether other original cast members will join them.

The original “One Tree Hill” aired for nine seasons on The WB and later The CW. The series, set in the fictional town of Tree Hill, North Carolina, initially centered on the rivalry between half-brothers Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty). The show evolved to explore themes of friendship, romance, and family drama, featuring a diverse cast including Bethany Joy Lenz, Paul Johansson, and Lee Norris.

Bush, Burton, and Lenz previously co-hosted the “One Tree Hill” rewatch podcast “Drama Queens,” though Burton left after Season 6. Robert Buckley, a later addition to the cast, now co-hosts the podcast.

Mark Schwahn, the original creator of “One Tree Hill,” is not involved in the sequel. Schwahn faced accusations of assault and harassment in 2017 from Burton and other cast members, which have been discussed in-depth on the podcast.
