US soldier Travis King, who made headlines by fleeing from South Korea to North Korea in July 2023, is set to plead guilty to desertion and other charges. According to his lawyer, Franklin Rosenblatt, King will admit guilt to five of the fourteen charges filed against him, including desertion and assault, as part of a plea deal. The remaining charges, which include possession of child pornography, are expected to be withdrawn and dismissed.
King’s plea and sentencing will take place on September 20 at a military base in Fort Bliss, Texas. Rosenblatt confirmed that King will enter his plea at a general court-martial, where he will address a military judge and provide an explanation for his actions.
King, who joined the US Army in January 2021, was stationed in South Korea as part of a unit rotation when he crossed into North Korean territory. Prior to his escape, King had been detained in South Korea for two months on charges related to assault and damage to a police car. He was released on July 10, eight days before his illegal crossing into North Korea.
The release deal, facilitated by Swedish officials, involved King being transported to the North Korean border with China. The specifics of his treatment in North Korea and the reasons behind his defection remain unclear, as does the reason for Pyongyang’s decision to expel him.
The US government has stated that it made no concessions to secure King’s release. As King prepares to face military justice, he has expressed gratitude for the support from his family and friends and appreciation for those who refrained from making premature judgments about him.
