Olympic gold medalist Imane Khelif is taking legal action against billionaire Elon Musk and renowned author JK Rowling, accusing them of “aggravated cyber-harassment” related to controversial remarks about her gender. The lawsuit, filed by Khelif’s lawyer Nabil Boudi, is centered on allegations of a “misogynist, racist, and sexist campaign” against the boxer.

Khelif, who won gold at the Paris Olympics, was subjected to intense scrutiny and harassment on social media following her August 1 boxing match in the 66-kg category. The controversy intensified when Musk and Rowling, among other high-profile figures, made claims about Khelif’s gender on X (formerly Twitter), referring to her as a “biological male.” These claims have been strongly refuted by Khelif, the Algerian Olympics committee, and the International Olympic Committee.

The lawsuit targets X, the platform where the controversial posts gained traction, allowing for a broad investigation under French law into all individuals involved in the harassment. Khelif’s lawyer indicated that the investigation could also involve former US President Donald Trump, who criticized Khelif’s participation in women’s sports during a rally and on his Truth Social account.

Despite the harassment, Khelif triumphed at the Olympics, clinching a gold medal and making her way to the finals despite earlier controversies. Boudi emphasized that the legal action is a fight for justice, dignity, and honor for the athlete.

The case highlights ongoing debates and tensions surrounding gender identity and its implications in sports, further fueled by high-profile endorsements and criticisms on social media platforms.
