In a recent interview with CNBC-TV18, Harrick Vin, Chief Technology Officer at Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), addressed common concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) potentially displacing human jobs. Vin argued that AI should be seen as a tool for enhancing human work rather than replacing it.

Vin highlighted that AI is poised to significantly boost productivity by enabling employees to perform their tasks more effectively. For example, in call centers, AI can automate routine tasks such as summarizing call transcripts and analyzing sentiment, thereby allowing agents to focus on improving customer interactions and anticipating needs. This shift could transform call centers into customer success centers, emphasizing proactive engagement over mere complaint management.

While acknowledging that AI’s application has largely been focused on pre-sale scenarios, Vin pointed out its potential for post-sale interactions as well. Advanced AI, integrated with connected devices like smart cars, could predict issues before they arise, thereby facilitating more proactive customer service.

One of the primary concerns about AI is its impact on job numbers due to increased efficiency. Vin addressed this by suggesting that while AI will drive productivity, it will also create new roles and opportunities. The nature of jobs will evolve from managing complaints to focusing on customer success, which will require different skills. “The number of people will not change, but the jobs they do will fundamentally shift,” Vin stated.

The rise of AI necessitates ongoing retraining and skill development. Vin emphasized that the “half-life” of a skill—its relevance over time—has dramatically decreased from 30 years to 6-7 years. This trend underscores the importance of continuous learning to stay relevant in the job market. He noted that as AI takes over more technical tasks, human roles will increasingly involve critical thinking, creativity, and nuanced judgment.

Looking ahead, Vin envisions a future where humans and machines collaborate closely, each enhancing the other’s capabilities. As AI handles more routine tasks, humans will focus on tasks that require complex problem-solving and creativity. This symbiotic relationship will result in a hybrid workforce where both humans and AI systems continuously improve each other, setting the stage for a new era of work.
