J Balvin makes a notable return with his new album Rayo, a tribute to his early days and the red Volkswagen Golf that symbolized his first steps in the music industry in Medellín, Colombia. The 15-track album is a celebration of Balvin’s roots, featuring his signature reggaeton sound and marking his comeback after a three-year hiatus following the release of 2021’s Jose.
In announcing Rayo, Balvin shared his excitement on social media, expressing his gratitude and joy in creating the album. “I’m here again, recharged, grateful, and enjoying music like when I first started,” said Balvin, whose real name is José Álvaro Osorio Balvín. He promised fans an album filled with energy and collaboration with both established and emerging artists.
Following his success as the second-most-streamed Latin artist on Spotify with hits like “Mi Gente” and “I Like It,” Balvin’s latest project features reggaeton beats crafted by top producers such as Keityn, L.e.x.v.z., and DJ Luian. The album showcases Balvin’s engaging vocal style, particularly in tracks like “Swat” and “Cosa De Locos.”
Rayo includes collaborations with up-and-coming artists like Blessd, Luar La L, Ryan Castro, and YOVNGCHIMI, highlighting the vibrant energy of the album. Key tracks such as “Swat,” “Ganster,” “Gaga,” and “Origami” deliver on Balvin’s promise of party anthems.
The album also explores a few new styles, incorporating elements of Afrobeats in “Stoker” featuring Carin Leon and EDM influences in the Latin trap track “En Alta.” Despite these experiments, the majority of the album remains firmly rooted in reggaeton and popetón, with themes centered on partying, relationships, and fun.
