The iconic video game duo, Mario and Sonic, won’t be making an appearance at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, marking a significant shift for their popular crossover series. Since their first joint Olympic adventure in 2008, the beloved characters from Nintendo and Sega have starred in several successful games featuring both summer and winter sports. However, fans will have to look elsewhere this year.
Lee Cocker, who was an executive producer on the series from its inception until the Tokyo 2020 edition, confirmed the absence of a Paris version in a recent post on X. Cocker’s announcement sparked a flood of responses from fans who cherished the unique collaboration between the two gaming legends.
The Mario & Sonic series began as an unexpected partnership in the 2000s, following a thaw in relations between Nintendo and Sega. Cocker presented the concept to both companies and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), leading to a game that became a massive hit, selling around 26 million copies. The success of the first game was partly due to the Wii’s popularity, which made it a family-friendly hit.
Despite the success of subsequent titles, the IOC has decided not to renew the licensing agreement for the Paris 2024 Games. Cocker speculates that the IOC’s decision might be driven by a desire to engage with new partners and explore emerging technologies, such as NFTs and esports. The French developer nWay has been chosen to create a mobile game, “Olympics Go!”, for this year’s event, which is said to be a well-executed but less expansive project compared to previous installments.
The decision has disappointed many, including speedrunners who have dedicated significant time to mastering the series. JH2000, a speedrunner with world records in the Winter Olympics versions, expressed the community’s dismay, noting that the lack of a new game felt like a sudden end to an era.
While the IOC cited “tight timelines” following the postponed Tokyo 2020 Games as a factor, there is hope that the series might return in the future. The legacy of Mario and Sonic’s Olympic adventures remains strong, with fans fondly recalling the games’ ability to bring together these two iconic characters in a unique setting.
Cocker reflects on the series with nostalgia: “It was a perfect blend of Olympic spirit and video game magic. The impact it had on people’s lives and their childhoods is something I am proud of. It was truly iconic.”
Though there might not be a new Mario & Sonic game this year, the legacy of their past Olympic escapades continues to resonate with fans around the world.
