In a significant diplomatic development, the United States has officially recognized Edmundo Gonzalez as the winner of Venezuela’s recent presidential election, rejecting incumbent President Nicolás Maduro’s claim of victory. The announcement was made by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on August 1, amid growing international scrutiny and domestic unrest in Venezuela.

According to Blinken, “Given the overwhelming evidence, it is quite clear to the United States and to the Venezuelan people that Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia won the most votes in Venezuela’s July 28 presidential election.” This statement marks a notable shift in US policy, as it aligns with the opposition’s assertion that Gonzalez won by a substantial margin, contrary to the results declared by Venezuela’s electoral council.

The Venezuelan electoral council had proclaimed Maduro the winner with 51% of the vote, but this result has been widely disputed. The opposition, which has been vocal in its criticism of the election process, claims that their tally—based on approximately 90% of the votes—shows Gonzalez with over twice the support of the incumbent president. Additionally, independent polling conducted before the election supports this claim.

In response to the disputed results, the opposition has released detailed vote tallies on a public website, while the government has provided only aggregate figures for each candidate. This lack of transparency has fueled widespread protests and allegations of electoral fraud.

Blinken’s statement did not include immediate sanctions but hinted at potential future actions. He emphasized US support for the re-establishment of democratic norms in Venezuela and suggested that the US is prepared to collaborate with international partners to support this process. The statement also underscored the need for protection of opposition leaders and called for restraint from law enforcement and security forces, urging them not to use political violence against citizens exercising their democratic rights.

In addition to the US stance, regional leaders from Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia have also called for Venezuela to release detailed voting tallies to clarify the situation. Their appeal reflects the growing international concern over the election’s legitimacy and the ongoing crisis in Venezuela.

The recognition of Edmundo Gonzalez by the United States is a pivotal moment in the Venezuelan political crisis and signals potential shifts in international diplomatic and economic responses to the country’s turbulent situation.
