Paris, 2 August 2024 — The Paris Olympics have been marred by controversy following a dramatic and contentious women’s boxing about between Italian boxer Angela Carini and Algerian opponent Imane Khelif. The fight, which lasted only 46 seconds, ended in a one-sided victory for Khelif and has ignited a heated debate over gender eligibility in sports.

Angela Carini, visibly distressed and injured, collapsed in the ring after Khelif landed a series of powerful punches, causing Carini to sustain a serious nose injury. Despite Khelif’s attempt to offer a handshake post-fight, Carini was overwhelmed by emotion, breaking down in tears on the canvas. In an emotional statement, Carini revealed that she had experienced severe pain and blood loss during the bout, which ultimately led to her early exit.

The bout’s outcome has intensified the ongoing controversy surrounding the inclusion of athletes who have undergone gender verification testing. Khelif, who was previously disqualified from the world championships last year due to elevated testosterone levels, has faced scrutiny over her eligibility to compete in the women’s category. Both Khelif and Taiwan’s Lin Yu-ting, who is scheduled to fight later this week, were cleared to compete in Paris despite their previous disqualifications.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has criticized the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for allowing athletes with male genetic characteristics to compete in women’s events. “The fight was not on an equal footing,” Meloni asserted, calling for a reevaluation of gender eligibility rules in sports.

Reem Alsalem, the UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls, echoed concerns about the physical and psychological impact on female athletes subjected to such intense scrutiny and competition. Alsalem condemned the situation, highlighting the distress and violence faced by athletes like Carini.

The International Olympic Committee maintains that all athletes competing in the women’s categories are in compliance with eligibility rules, citing their official identification documents. IOC spokesman Mark Adams emphasized that the organization is committed to ensuring fair competition according to established regulations.

The incident at the Paris Olympics underscores the ongoing debate about gender and fair play in sports, raising important questions about the future of inclusion and equality in the athletic arena. As the Games continue, the focus remains on navigating these complex issues while upholding the integrity of Olympic competition.
