In a delightful nod to the creator of the A Song of Ice and Fire universe, George R.R. Martin makes a subtle appearance in the latest episode of House of the Dragon Season 2. The episode, titled “The Red Sowing,” features a clever tribute to Martin that fans might easily miss.
A behind-the-scenes revelation has confirmed that a face carved into the weirwood tree at Harrenhal in this episode was modeled after Martin himself. This tribute was the brainchild of showrunner Ryan Condal, who wanted to honor Martin’s immense contribution to the world of Westeros.
Production designer Jim Clay shared that Condal’s vision was to subtly integrate Martin’s likeness into the tree, creating a design that blends seamlessly into the bark. “Ryan wanted it to be a bit of a tribute, with the face gradually fading into the tree’s surface,” Clay explained. “It was designed so you’d recognize it if you were looking closely, but it wasn’t overt.”
This hidden homage is particularly fitting given Martin’s pivotal role as the creator of both A Song of Ice and Fire and Fire & Blood, the latter of which serves as the source material for House of the Dragon. Martin is also an executive producer for the prequel series.
Weirwood trees, which are deeply embedded in the lore of Westeros, have appeared throughout both Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon. These ancient trees, linked to the old gods of Westeros, were once widespread before being largely destroyed by the Andals in favor of the Faith of the Seven. The intricate carvings on these trees often hold significant meaning, connecting to the mystical elements of the series.
In the behind-the-scenes footage, Condal discusses how the weirwood tree at Harrenhal reflects the castle’s state of decay, contrasting with the more intact trees seen in other locations like the Red Keep. The choice to feature a George R.R. Martin-inspired face within the tree is a fitting tribute to the man who brought the world of Westeros to life.
