ORLANDO (AP) — Manchester City endured a tough defeat on Tuesday night as they lost 4-1 in a penalty shoot-out after a pulsating 2-2 draw against Barcelona at Camping World Stadium. Despite an entertaining match and valiant efforts, City’s pre-season tour of the United States ended with another disappointing result.

In front of a vibrant crowd of 63,237, City’s penalty woes were highlighted by missed spot-kicks from Kalvin Phillips and Jacob Wright. Barcelona capitalized on their opportunities, converting all three of their penalties to secure the victory.

The match saw Barcelona take the lead through Pau Victor’s low finish, but City responded with a well-taken goal by Nico O’Reilly. However, Pablo Torre restored Barcelona’s advantage just before halftime, leaving City to chase the game.

Jack Grealish provided a glimmer of hope for City when he leveled the score at 2-2 with a stunning strike, set up by Mateo Kovacic. Despite City’s dominance and several chances to take the lead, including a contentious penalty appeal from Rico Lewis, the game remained deadlocked as it headed into stoppage time.

As the match proceeded to the shoot-out, City’s momentum faltered. Barcelona’s goalkeeper, Ander Astralaga, emerged as the hero by saving penalties from Phillips and Wright. Barcelona, in contrast, displayed clinical finishing to secure their win.

City had started the game brightly with an early chance from Grealish and a near miss by Erling Haaland, whose header was cleared off the line. Despite their pressure and near misses, including a free-kick from Phillips and a persistent Barcelona defense, the visitors managed to take the lead through Victor before being pegged back by O’Reilly.

The second half saw City pressing for a decisive goal, with Grealish’s equalizer showing his ability to produce moments of magic. Kovacic’s playmaking was instrumental in City’s attacking efforts, but Barcelona’s defense held firm and the match ultimately hinged on the shoot-out.

City’s lineup featured Ederson in goal, with Rico Lewis, Kalvin Phillips, Josko Gvardiol, and Josh Wilson-Esbrand forming the defense. The midfield was anchored by Kovacic, with O’Reilly and James McAtee providing support. Grealish and Oscar Bobb were deployed on the wings, with Haaland leading the attack.

Barcelona’s starting XI included Inaki Pena in goal and a mix of experienced and young players, with Victor and Torre playing crucial roles in their attacking play.

As City prepares to wrap up their U.S. tour, Pep Guardiola will look to address the issues highlighted in this match and seek to refine his squad ahead of the new season. Despite the defeat, City’s performance in the pre-season has shown promise, and they will aim to carry that form into their competitive fixtures.

For now, the focus shifts to the remaining matches of the tour, as City continues to build towards the start of the Premier League season.
