King Charles and Princess Kate Middleton have been overwhelmed by public support following their recent cancer diagnoses. According to the Royal Household’s Sovereign Grant Report for the 2023-2024 financial year, the two royals received nearly 30,000 messages of support after their respective health announcements.
The report, released on July 24, details that out of 138,303 items of correspondence received by the Royal Household this year, 27,620 were well-wishes specifically addressed to King Charles and Princess Kate. This unprecedented outpouring of support comes after both royals disclosed their health struggles earlier this year.
In February, Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles had been diagnosed with cancer and had begun treatment. The announcement was followed by a poignant video in late February where the King was seen opening some of the many cards sent by well-wishers. “I’ve had so many wonderful messages and cards. It’s reduced me to tears most of the time,” he shared, reflecting on the emotional impact of the support he received.
Princess Kate’s diagnosis was revealed in a pre-recorded speech on March 22, where she disclosed that she was undergoing chemotherapy following cancer found in post-operative tests from an abdominal surgery. The revelation followed months of speculation regarding her absence from public events.
Both King Charles and Princess Kate have since adjusted their public engagements to focus on their health. King Charles resumed his royal duties on April 30, continuing to engage with the public behind the scenes. In contrast, Princess Kate has maintained a lower profile, making only a few public appearances since her diagnosis. Her notable appearances included the Trooping the Colour on June 15 and the Wimbledon Tennis Championships on July 14.
Despite the challenges, Princess Kate expressed deep gratitude for the support she and her family have received. In a June 14 update, she acknowledged the impact of the well-wishes, saying, “I have been blown away by all the kind messages of support and encouragement over the last couple of months. It really has made the world of difference to William and me and has helped us both through some of the harder times.”
