Marvel Studios shocked fans at San Diego Comic-Con’s Hall H panel with the announcement that Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as Doctor Doom in the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. This revelation came alongside the news that Joe and Anthony Russo will direct the next two Avengers installments.
Downey Jr., who previously portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in nine MCU films, will now take on the role of the iconic villain Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday. The film, which will mark the end of MCU’s Phase 6, is set to release in May 2026. It replaces the previously announced Avengers: The Kang Dynasty due to Jonathan Majors’ ongoing legal issues.
The Russo brothers described Downey’s casting as proof of the “unimaginable possibilities in the Marvel multiverse.” They hinted that Downey’s portrayal of Doctor Doom will be one of the most compelling characters in fiction. Downey, known for his complex roles, expressed his excitement about playing another intricate character. “New mask, same task. What’d I tell you, I like playing complicated characters,” he said.
Avengers: Doomsday will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars, slated for release in May 2027. This new phase in the MCU promises to deliver high-stakes drama and epic storytelling as the franchise continues to evolve.
