Following Apple’s successful foray into manufacturing in India, Google is poised to commence production of its Pixel smartphones within the country. Reports indicate that Google will partner with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies’ subsidiary, Padget Electronics, to facilitate commercial production.
Initial trials have already begun in Tamil Nadu, with Foxconn—known for its manufacturing prowess in Apple devices—leading the production efforts. While Google India declined immediate comment, sources suggest that formal announcements could come in the latter half of the year.
Under the government’s production-linked incentive (PLI) program aimed at bolstering domestic manufacturing, Google’s move is expected to scale up production rapidly. The initiative aligns with Google’s plans to manufacture base variants of the Pixel phone through Dixon Technologies, with Foxconn focusing on the Pro variants.
Commercial production is slated to commence by September, with export operations to Europe and the US following once production stabilizes. This strategic shift underscores Google’s commitment to expanding its hardware footprint globally while capitalizing on India’s burgeoning manufacturing capabilities.
In parallel, Apple’s recent export figures highlight India’s growing importance as a manufacturing hub. The tech giant exported iPhones worth ₹16,500 crore in the first two months of the current financial year, contributing significantly to the country’s electronics manufacturing sector. Apple’s production in India, amounting to approximately $14 billion for FY24, underscores the substantial growth catalyzed by initiatives like the PLI scheme.
Moreover, the India Cellular and Electronics Association (ICEA) reports a staggering surge in mobile phone production—from ₹18,900 crore in 2014-15 to an estimated ₹4.10 lakh crore in FY24, marking a phenomenal 2,000% increase driven by government incentives.
As Google prepares to expand its manufacturing footprint in India, analysts anticipate a transformative impact on the country’s electronics sector. The collaborative efforts with Foxconn and Dixon Technologies not only signify a significant investment in local manufacturing capabilities but also reinforce India’s position as a key player in global electronics supply chains.
The upcoming formal announcement by Google is eagerly awaited, promising to further elevate India’s stature as a preferred destination for high-tech manufacturing and exports in the global arena.
