Julian Assange, the founder of Wikileaks, has been released from UK custody after striking a deal with US authorities that will see him avoid further imprisonment. Assange, 52, faced charges related to the obtaining and disclosure of national defense information, stemming from Wikileaks’ publication of classified US military records and diplomatic cables.

Assange, who spent the last five years in a British prison fighting extradition to the United States, left the UK following the agreement. According to reports, he will plead guilty to a single charge in a court on the Northern Mariana Islands, a US commonwealth, where he will not serve additional time in US custody. Instead, he will receive credit for his time served in the UK.

The legal saga, which began years ago, intensified with the US government arguing that Wikileaks’ disclosures posed threats to lives, particularly during the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. Assange’s release marks a significant development in a case that has been widely debated for its implications on press freedom and government transparency.

In a statement on the platform X (formerly Twitter), Wikileaks announced Assange’s departure from Belmarsh prison, where he had spent 1,901 days in confinement. He was subsequently released from Stansted airport, boarding a flight bound for Australia, his home country.

Assange’s wife, Stella Assange, expressed gratitude to supporters who advocated for his release throughout the lengthy legal battle. The case has garnered international attention, with supporters and critics alike debating the balance between national security concerns and journalistic freedoms.

The Biden administration’s consideration of dropping the prosecution against Assange, coupled with a recent UK High Court ruling allowing him to challenge extradition assurances, added complexity to the case. Assange and his legal team have long maintained that the charges were politically motivated.

Wikileaks, founded by Assange in 2006, remains a controversial organization known for its publication of sensitive government documents. The release of a video in 2010 showing a US military helicopter attack in Baghdad that resulted in civilian casualties, including journalists, thrust Wikileaks into global prominence.

Assange’s journey through legal battles included seeking asylum in Ecuador’s London embassy to avoid extradition to Sweden on separate charges, which were later dropped. His health reportedly deteriorated during his confinement, including a reported stroke in 2021.

As Assange returns to Australia, the resolution of his case marks the end of a chapter in the ongoing debate over the boundaries of press freedom and the accountability of governments worldwide. The deal is set to be finalized in court on Wednesday, June 26, on the Northern Mariana Islands, where Assange is expected to enter his plea.
