In the third week of August, the K-drama landscape has been abuzz with exciting developments. Disney Plus’ latest K-drama, The Tyrant, starring Kim Seon Ho, Cha Seung Won, Kim Kang Woo, and Jo Yoon Su, made a notable entry into the top five of the buzzworthy K-drama chart. Debuting on August 14, this dark espionage thriller, directed by Park Hoon Jung (known for The Witch), premiered at #5 in the TV-OTT category with a buzzworthiness score of 7.71%. The show marks Kim Seon Ho’s return to television following his big screen debut with The Childe in 2023.
Fans of Kim Seon Ho can look forward to an exciting year, with the actor set to appear in several upcoming projects throughout 2024 and 2025. The Tyrant follows a gripping narrative akin to the film’s style, quickly establishing its presence on the weekly rankings.
While The Tyrant made waves with its debut, the true standout of the week was tvN’s Love Next Door. This romantic comedy, streaming on Netflix, has been climbing the ranks and now holds the #2 spot on the TV-OTT chart. The series, featuring Jung Hae In and Jung So Min, has garnered significant attention and success, even surpassing SBS’ Good Partner, which topped both the TV-OTT and TV categories last week.
Love Next Door has also seen notable success on Netflix’s Global Top 10 rankings for non-English TV titles, landing at #5. In its first week on the chart (August 12-18), the drama accumulated 1.1 million views and 2,700,000 hours viewed. Jung So Min and Jung Hae In have both achieved impressive positions on the drama performers’ buzzworthiness rankings, with Jung So Min at #1 and Jung Hae In at #2.
Despite the surge of Love Next Door, the previous week’s chart-toppers, Chae Jong Hyeop and Kim So Hyun from Serendipity’s Embrace, have seen a slight decline. They now occupy the fourth and fifth positions, respectively. Notably, Serendipity’s Embrace concluded on August 13, yet its lead actors continue to maintain a strong presence on the chart.
Additionally, TVN’s upcoming K-drama No Gain No Love, which stars Shin Min A and Kim Young Dae, has generated considerable buzz ahead of its August 26 premiere. The show has already made its mark in the top 10 ranks of the TV (Drama) category, thanks to a steady stream of teasers and previews.
This week’s K-drama chart highlights the dynamic nature of the genre, with new releases making immediate impacts and ongoing series maintaining their appeal. As the season progresses, fans can expect more shifts and new entries, reflecting the vibrant and evolving landscape of Korean television drama.
