Jenny Tran, the groundbreaking first Asian Bachelorette, has shared her emotional journey dealing with backlash and hate following her historic announcement. In a candid interview with People, Tran reflected on the mixed reactions she received from the public after being named the lead of the upcoming season of The Bachelorette.
Tran, who previously appeared on Joey Graziadei’s season of The Bachelor, revealed that her announcement was met with a significant amount of racism and negativity. “I won’t say that it’s all been positive because racism still exists,” Tran stated, acknowledging the harsh realities she faced. Despite receiving numerous hate messages, she also expressed her appreciation for the support and encouragement from fans who are excited to see someone like her represented on their screens.
The 26-year-old admitted that the experience was initially overwhelming. She had left for filming immediately after her announcement, without access to her phone, and was unaware of the online reactions until her return. “I was so excited and so hopeful, and then I go online and read a bajillion people’s opinions on everything. That was really disappointing,” Tran said.
Despite the difficulties, Tran remains grateful for the opportunity and is determined to use her platform to inspire others. She described her role as a “role model” she wished she had growing up and emphasized the importance of embracing one’s unique identity. “You should not want to be ‘normal,’ but rather ‘embrace what makes you You,’” she noted.
As she prepares for her season, which premiered on July 8, Tran reflects on the personal growth she experienced during the show and remains hopeful about the positive impact her presence will have. Tran’s journey as the first Asian Bachelorette is not only a significant milestone for the show but also a powerful statement on representation and inclusivity.
