After nearly sixteen years in development, The Crow is set to return to theaters, bringing James O’Barr’s 1989 comic-book series back to the big screen. Announced in 2008, the film has seen various actors considered for the lead role over the years, including Bradley Cooper, Jason Momoa, Tom Hiddleston, and Luke Evans. Ultimately, Bill Skarsgård secured the role of Eric Draven, a man resurrected to avenge his and his fiancée’s deaths. FKA Twigs joins him as his fiancée in this reimagining, directed by Rupert Sanders (known for Ghost in the Shell).
The newly released trailer promises a darker, more intense take on the story. “A crow carries their soul to the land of the dead,” the narrator reveals. “But sometimes something so bad happens that the soul cannot rest until you put the wrong things right.” Skarsgård, known for his affinity for complex and dark roles, embraces this new rendition of the character with a commitment to honoring the original’s spirit while modernizing the narrative. “I was a huge fan of the original film growing up as a kid and was so honored to take on the role of Eric Draven,” Skarsgård said. “Rupert Sanders’s vision of reimagining the story drew me in, and I felt a responsibility to stay true to the source material.”
The original 1994 film, starring Brandon Lee, was tragically marred by Lee’s accidental death from a prop-gun accident. Despite the tragedy, the film became a cult classic, earning $94 million on a $23 million budget. The franchise continued with three additional films, including two direct-to-video sequels. This latest film is technically the fifth installment but represents the first time the Eric Draven story is being retold.
Chad Stahelski, a stunt double for Brandon Lee and director of the John Wick series, praised Skarsgård’s casting. “Bill’s got that ethereal nature that makes him feel out of this world, or from another planet or existence,” Stahelski noted. Sanders, too, aims to balance homage with innovation, hoping to capture the original film’s romantic and melancholic tone. “It’s romantic in the same sense as a Cure song,” Sanders explained. “There’s a melancholy there.”
The Crow is scheduled to hit theaters on August 23, promising to bring a fresh, yet respectful, take on a beloved and influential series.
