Robinhood expands UK offering with desktop trading platform, targeting seasoned investors
The US-based commission-free trading app introduces its desktop platform to British users, aiming to capture a more experienced trading audience amid rising retail investor activity.

Robinhood Markets Inc. has expanded its presence in the United Kingdom by rolling out a desktop trading platform, the company announced Tuesday, hoping to appeal to the country’s growing segment of experienced retail investors. This move follows Robinhood’s recent mobile app launch in the UK, marking a significant bid by the U.S. fintech to broaden its international reach.

Robinhood Targets Experienced Investors in the UK

Robinhood, which soared to prominence during the U.S. retail trading boom of recent years, is seeking to replicate its success in the competitive British market. The company said its new desktop trading experience is designed to meet the needs of more seasoned investors who often trade larger amounts and require advanced tools not always available in mobile-only applications.

“We see a significant community of sophisticated, engaged investors in the UK who want an intuitive yet powerful experience on desktop,” said Jordan Sinclair, Robinhood UK’s President, in a statement to Reuters. “As investing habits evolve, accessibility and insight-driven tools are key to empowering our customers.”

Building on UK Momentum

The desktop rollout comes just months after Robinhood debuted its mobile trading app in the UK, its first major international expansion. The company enters a robust market: According to the UK’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), the number of self-directed retail investors jumped to over eight million in 2024—a 15% increase from 2023.

Robinhood’s user-centric approach, which includes commission-free trading and real-time market data, is central to its pitch. The new desktop platform will offer features like interactive charts, customizable watchlists, and in-depth analytics, aiming to differentiate Robinhood from homegrown rivals such as Freetrade and more established platforms like Hargreaves Lansdown and IG Group.

Navigating a Competitive—and Regulated—Market

Robinhood’s expansion takes place as UK regulators urge caution on riskier investing behavior, especially among young and first-time investors. FCA guidelines require trading apps to prominently warn users about the risks involved in investing, reflecting lessons from the “meme stock” frenzy driven in part by Robinhood’s US platform in 2021.

The fintech giant confirmed its desktop trading offering will feature integrated educational content and clear risk disclosures as part of its UK compliance. About 70% of the UK’s retail investors reported making at least one commission-free trade in 2024, showing growing demand for such services.

Attracting the Experienced—and Diversifying Globally

By providing desktop access, Robinhood aims to widen its net: industry research suggests over half of UK retail investors prefer desktop platforms for advanced charting and trade execution. Robinhood’s expansion comes as global fintech rivals—including eToro, Revolut, and Charles Schwab—also seek greater UK market share.

“Robinhood’s trajectory in the US gives it brand recognition, but success in the UK depends on adapting to regulatory expectations and seasoned users’ needs,” said Paul Hollingsworth, fintech partner at London-based law firm Clifford Chance.

Outlook: The Global Race for Retail Investors

Robinhood faces the dual challenge of building trust with UK retail investors while fending off established competitors. Its foray into desktop trading reflects both a desire to cater to long-term, higher-value clients and to extend its global footprint following a slowdown in US growth.

The company has not ruled out future offerings in Europe should the UK launch prove successful. For now, Robinhood’s leadership sees the UK as a crucial proving ground. “We’re committed to evolving our platform and building on the momentum our UK community has shown,” Sinclair said.
