In a recent statement to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), Nadim Najjar, Managing Director for Central Eastern Europe, Middle East Africa (CEEMA) at the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), shed light on the significant transformation underway in the financial markets of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Central to this change is a strong focus on sustainability, aligning with global and regional trends that prioritize environmental responsibility.
Najjar applauded the UAE’s commitment to directing substantial capital toward achieving net-zero emissions, recognizing the country’s leadership role in securing climate objectives. A noteworthy accomplishment, according to Najjar, is the UAE’s establishment of a fully regulated carbon market, integrating carbon into the regulatory framework. This allows effective management and trading of carbon, providing companies with essential tools to reduce their carbon footprint and manage emissions.
“This initiative not only bolsters responsible corporate practices but also equips investors with the necessary information to make informed and sustainable investment decisions,” Najjar emphasized.
He highlighted the multifaceted sustainability efforts of the UAE, coupled with its emphasis on innovation and technology, as well as its reputation as an entrepreneurial hub. According to Najjar, these factors position the UAE well to champion innovation and drive sustainable solutions. He praised the inclusive approach of the UAE’s COP28 Presidency, emphasizing its role in facilitating the exchange of ideas and perspectives to accelerate progress toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Najjar specifically pointed out the collaboration between LSEG and the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange (ADX) in launching the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) benchmark index in November. Describing this partnership as a strategic alliance aimed at revolutionizing the financial landscape, Najjar underscored its commitment to providing reliable, accurate, and transparent indices that foster investor confidence.
He emphasized that the ESG index is more than just a benchmark; it symbolizes a collective commitment to sustainability, responding to the growing demand for investments aligned with ESG values. This aligns with the global shift toward responsible investing and addresses the critical need for more sustainable financial markets.
The ESG index serves as a powerful tool for investors, offering a reliable standard to assess company performance within the Abu Dhabi market. It focuses on environmental, social, and corporate governance criteria, enabling investors to align their investment objectives with values. Najjar highlighted its role in encouraging institutions to disclose ESG information, promoting greater accountability and aiding in the identification of potential risks and opportunities.
The partnership between LSEG and ADX goes beyond collaboration; it represents a strategic alliance forged on a shared commitment to sustainability, as exemplified by active participation in the United Nations-led Sustainable Stock Exchanges initiative. This commitment positions the UAE’s financial markets as leaders in fostering positive change and contributing to a more sustainable future for all.
