In a historic move, US Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for President of the United States. This significant achievement marks Harris’s ascent as the party’s standard-bearer in the upcoming November election against former President Donald Trump.

Harris, who was the sole candidate on the ballot during a five-day electronic voting process, expressed her gratitude and honor in a phone-in statement to a celebratory party event. “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States,” she said.

The formal confirmation of Harris’s nomination is set to take place at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago later this month. Her path to the nomination was largely unchallenged, following President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race on July 21, and his endorsement of Harris.

As the first Black and South Asian woman to secure a major party’s presidential nomination, Harris’s candidacy is historic. Since Biden’s exit, she has gained overwhelming support, crushed fundraising records, and has begun to close the polling gap against Trump.

Harris is poised to make her first public appearance alongside her running mate in Philadelphia, a pivotal swing state. The campaign trail will then take her to various key locations, including western Wisconsin, Detroit, and Las Vegas. Democratic Governor Josh Shapiro is among those being considered as a potential vice-presidential pick, along with several other prominent figures such as Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear and US Senator Mark Kelly.

The 59-year-old Harris, a former US senator and California attorney general, aims to make history as the first woman to become President if elected in November. Her rise reflects a significant moment in American political history, symbolizing the breaking of multiple barriers in the highest office of the land.
