In a dramatic turn of events at the Paris Olympics 2024, Slovakia’s Tamara Potocka collapsed after completing her heat in the women’s 800m freestyle, which saw American star Katie Ledecky secure a spot in the final. The incident overshadowed an otherwise eventful session at the La Defense Arena.
Potocka, competing in her first Olympic Games, finished last in her heat, behind Canada’s Summer McIntosh and Ledecky. As she climbed out of the pool, she suddenly collapsed and required immediate medical attention. The 21-year-old Slovak swimmer was carried out on a stretcher and given an oxygen mask. Organizers have reported that she is conscious, but further updates on her condition are awaited.
Katie Ledecky, aiming for her fourth consecutive Olympic gold in the 800m freestyle, demonstrated her dominance with a time of 8:16.62. The result solidified her position as one of the greatest female swimmers in Olympic history. Ledecky’s closest competitor, Australia’s Ariarne Titmus, finished third in the same heat with a time of 8:19.87.
This victory adds to Ledecky’s impressive tally of medals, which includes a recent silver in the 4x200m freestyle relay. Her pursuit of a record-tying ninth Olympic gold continues, with the 800m final set to be a highlight of the Games.
In other swimming news, Canada’s Summer McIntosh, who has already claimed gold and silver medals in Paris, topped the timesheets in the 200m medley with a time of 2:09.90. American Caeleb Dressel, the defending 100m butterfly champion, posted the sixth-fastest time in the heats, with a time of 50.83 seconds, and will look to secure a place in the semifinals.
The session also saw France’s Leon Marchand poised for another strong performance as he aims to add a fourth gold to his impressive collection.
As the Paris Games continue, all eyes will be on the outcomes of these high-stakes events, with athletes like Ledecky and Dressel continuing to chase Olympic glory.
