Punkie Johnson is leaving Saturday Night Live after four seasons. The 39-year-old comedian confirmed her departure in an Instagram video posted on Thursday.
“After four seasons, I will not be returning to SNL for the 50th,” Johnson revealed. She initially mentioned her exit during a stand-up performance at Brooklyn’s Union Hall, inadvertently breaking the news when asked about her future with the show.
In her Instagram clip, Johnson assured fans that her exit is amicable. “It’s no bad blood, no bridges burned, no hard feelings,” she said. “I love my people! I didn’t think this would be such a big deal.”
Reflecting on her time with the show, Johnson expressed gratitude, saying, “SNL was a dream I didn’t even know I could achieve. Being part of such an elite comedy institution has been incredible. I’m still going to be at the after-parties acting a plumb fool!”
Johnson, who joined SNL as a featured player in 2020 and was promoted to repertory status in 2022, is known for her memorable sketches and “Weekend Update” segments. She impressed audiences with her celebrity impressions, including those of Queen Latifah, Ice Spice, and others.
Several SNL cast members shared their love and support in response to Johnson’s post. Ego Nwodim wrote, “Love you til the death of me Punkie!!!” while Heidi Gardner and Chloe Fineman also expressed their affection.
The announcement comes shortly before SNL’s 50th season, which premieres on September 28. Maya Rudolph is set to reprise her popular role as Vice President Kamala Harris for the milestone season.
