One standout example is Penny Lee Dean, who in 1978 set a record for swimming across the English Channel that remains unbroken to this day. Professor Øyvind Sandbakk, a sports scientist at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, notes that while the performance gap between elite female and male athletes has stabilized at around 8-12%, the difference varies significantly by sport. For example, the gap is narrower in ultra-endurance swimming compared to strength-based sports. Sandbakk emphasizes the need for more research focusing on female athletes to understand these nuances better.
