YouTube is shaking things up with an exciting update to its Shorts feature! Beginning October 15, 2024, creators will be able to upload videos up to three minutes long, opening up new avenues for storytelling and creativity. This change is designed to meet the growing demand for short-form content while giving creators more time to engage their audiences.
New Eligibility for Shorts
Starting on October 15, any videos with a vertical or square aspect ratio that are up to three minutes in length will automatically be classified as Shorts. This means they’ll be eligible for YouTube’s revenue-sharing model, allowing creators to earn money through the Shorts Feed. However, it’s important to note that any content uploaded before this date will still be categorized as long-form videos, continuing to monetize through YouTube’s traditional model on the Watch Page.
Currently, creators won’t be able to shoot three-minute Shorts directly using the Shorts Camera on the YouTube mobile app. Instead, they can upload these longer clips through YouTube Studio, accessible on both desktop and mobile devices.
Monetization and Copyright Rules
YouTube is also taking a firm stance on copyright issues. Any Shorts that include third-party claimed content longer than one minute will be blocked globally, meaning they won’t be viewable or recommended on the platform. Additionally, these videos will not qualify for monetization.
Creators can choose to remove the claimed content or dispute the claim if they believe it’s incorrect. Meanwhile, Shorts that are under one minute remain unaffected by these restrictions, giving creators some flexibility.
This update marks a significant move in YouTube’s mission to enhance its short-form content offerings while responsibly managing copyright concerns. Creators can look forward to greater flexibility in content length, but they’ll need to navigate the new monetization guidelines carefully.
As the platform evolves, YouTube continues to empower creators with innovative tools to connect with their audiences in fresh and engaging ways. Mark your calendars for October 15, and get ready to unleash your creativity with the new three-minute Shorts!
