Former Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush are set to play pivotal roles in commemorating America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, a significant effort aimed at bridging political divides during a period of intense polarization. Both Obama and Bush, along with their respective first ladies, Michelle Obama and Laura Bush, will serve as honorary national co-chairs of America250, an initiative established by Congress in 2016 to oversee the milestone celebration.
The initiative, which marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, seeks to foster bipartisan unity in an era characterized by heightened political discord and concern over potential violence as the nation approaches a contentious presidential election. By enlisting both recent Democratic and Republican presidents, the effort aims to exemplify cooperation and shared national pride amidst a fragmented political landscape.
Rosie Rios, former U.S. Treasurer and current head of America250, underscored the inclusive nature of the celebration. “This is a grassroots effort that engages Americans from all walks of life, from Guam to Alaska, Fairbanks to Philadelphia, and everything in between,” Rios stated. “It’s about celebrating and honoring our status as the oldest democracy in the world.”
