Bapu’s statue vandalized in New York:Demolition of a life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi; Indian embassy demands action
A bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi was vandalized by miscreants in New York, USA. After the incident on Saturday in the Manhattan area, the consulate of India has expressed displeasure. At the same time, the Indian-American community also expressed concern over the incident.
According to the Consulate General of India in New York, the statue was vandalized by some unidentified persons in the early hours of Saturday. The consulate strongly condemns the incident of vandalism of the statue, the statement said. At present, the matter has been taken up with local officials and the US State Department for immediate investigation. The officers have been appealed to take action against those responsible for this.
This 8-feet-tall statue was installed on 2 October 1986 and was
donated by the Gandhi Memorial International Foundation. It was established on 2 October 1986 on the occasion of 117th birth anniversary of Gandhiji. The statue was removed in 2001 and restored and preserved in 2002.
Such incidents have happened in the past as well, such incidents
of vandalism have happened in America with the statue of Bapu. On January 26, Khalistan supporters attempted to desecrate the Gandhi statue in Washington DC. Khalistanis had put their flag on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi. In January 2021, a 6-foot-tall statue of Bapu was damaged in Central Park, California.
Earlier in December 2020, Bapu’s statue in front of the Indian Embassy in Washington was damaged. This work was also done by the supporters of Khalistan. Earlier in June 2020, the statue of Gandhi was damaged by spray painting outside the embassy.
