Former President Donald Trump was swiftly taken to safety on Sunday following what the FBI has described as an apparent assassination attempt at his golf course in West Palm Beach, Florida. The incident, which unfolded at the Trump International Golf Club, marks the second such attempt on Trump’s life in recent months.
Details of the Incident
The assassination attempt occurred at approximately 1:30 PM local time (5:30 PM GMT). According to law enforcement officials, the gunman was positioned in the bushes near holes five, six, and seven of the golf course. Secret Service agents, who typically inspect the course ahead of Trump’s arrival, spotted a rifle barrel protruding from the foliage and immediately responded. The agents, who were stationed approximately 300-500 yards away from the shooter, fired several rounds at the suspect.
Sheriff Ric Bradshaw confirmed that the shooter was in a concealed area with a clear view of the golf holes, which provided some cover. The Secret Service’s swift and effective response was credited with averting a potential tragedy.
Trump’s Response
Trump, who was unharmed in the incident, initially reported that there were “gunshots in his vicinity” but assured his supporters that he was “SAFE AND WELL” in a statement released shortly after the event. In a subsequent message, Trump expressed that his “resolve is only stronger” following the attempt on his life.
Suspect Apprehended
The suspect, identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, was apprehended later that day on the I-95 highway. Witnesses who observed the gunman fleeing were able to provide photographs of his vehicle and license plate, which led to his arrest. Authorities discovered an AK-47-style rifle, a GoPro camera, and two backpacks near the scene of the attempted shooting.
Ongoing Investigation and Reactions
The FBI, along with the Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies, is leading the investigation into the incident. FBI Miami Field Office’s Jeffrey Veltri indicated that extensive resources have been deployed, including crisis response teams and evidence technicians.
The White House has confirmed that President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the situation and expressed relief over Trump’s safety. Harris condemned the violence, stating that “violence has no place in America.”
Bipartisan leaders from the congressional task force investigating a previous assassination attempt in Pennsylvania have also voiced their concerns, calling for a briefing on the recent event to assess security measures and responses.
Secret Service representative Rafael Barros mentioned that security measures had been enhanced following the previous attempt, but the threat level remains high.
As the investigation continues, officials and political leaders alike are reflecting on the gravity of political violence and the importance of maintaining robust security measures.
