The merchandise, which debuted on September 12, included T-shirts featuring designs reminiscent of Swift’s Eras Tour apparel but with Trump-themed twists.
The timing of the merchandise release, just days after Swift publicly supported Harris for the 2024 presidential election, appeared to be an attempt by Trump’s campaign to attract some of Swift’s vast fan base. The T-shirts featured various images of Trump, including his mug shot, and were advertised with the slogan “Look What You Made Me Do,” a reference to one of Swift’s popular songs. The design mimicked the style of Swift’s Eras Tour merchandise but replaced Swift’s name with Trump’s campaign slogan, “Donald J. Trump Make America Great Again.”
Swift’s supporters, known as Swifties, quickly voiced their outrage over the merchandise, accusing the Trump campaign of blatant copyright infringement and exploitation of Swift’s brand. Many took to X (formerly Twitter) to express their frustration, with some suggesting that legal action might be forthcoming. One user commented, “I see a copyright lawsuit in the making based on the design,” while another added, “All this is gonna do is increase Swiftie registrations to vote for Kamala.”
Critics of the campaign’s move also pointed out the apparent lack of originality in the merchandise. “Original thought has never been their strong suit,” one user remarked. There were also comments expressing anticipation for a potential legal battle. “I can’t wait to see her go after him in a lawsuit. This will be epic,” another user wrote.
