President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris have issued strong statements condemning the recent school shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. On September 4, 14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire, resulting in the deaths of two students and two teachers, with nine others hospitalized.
In a White House statement, Biden expressed deep sorrow over the “senseless gun violence” that has marred what should have been a celebratory back-to-school season. He condemned the normalization of such violence, highlighting the shift from education to survival tactics in schools. Biden emphasized the need for urgent legislative action, calling for a ban on assault weapons, universal background checks, and other safety measures.
Vice President Harris also spoke out, mourning the victims and calling the tragedy “senseless.” She underscored the need to end the gun violence epidemic, stressing that the current state of affairs is unacceptable and preventable.
Colt Gray is currently in custody and will face murder charges as an adult. The victims have been identified as math teachers Richard Aspinwall and Christina Irimie, and students Mason Schermerhorn and Christian Angulo.
Both Biden and Harris reaffirmed their commitment to addressing gun violence through legislation and executive actions, stressing the importance of collaboration across party lines to enact meaningful change.
