Vance’s remarks came after reports of an altercation between Trump’s campaign team and a cemetery official, who allegedly attempted to stop them from filming and photographing in Section 60, the burial site for military personnel who died in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Vance, visibly agitated, responded to Harris’s comments by saying, “Kamala Harris can go to hell” if she wanted to criticize Trump for attending the ceremony meant to honor the 13 servicemembers who perished during the Afghanistan withdrawal. Harris had previously described the incident as “pretty sad” and “not surprising,” reflecting concerns about the appropriateness of Trump’s visit.
In a campaign event in Erie, Pennsylvania, on August 28, Vance expressed his frustration, accusing Harris of being derelict in her duties regarding the Afghanistan withdrawal. “The other thing that our veterans care more about is that three years ago, 13 brave innocent Americans died. And they died because Kamala Harris refused to do her job and there hasn’t been a single investigation or a single firing,” Vance asserted. He further criticized Harris for not addressing the circumstances surrounding the deaths of these servicemembers, emphasizing that her focus should be on accountability rather than on Trump’s visit.
Vance also dismissed media coverage of the Arlington incident, arguing that it was exaggerated. He suggested that the controversy was a manufactured story, intended to distract from more pressing issues. “The altercation at Arlington cemetery is the media creating a story where I really don’t think that there is one,” Vance said. He claimed that the Gold Star families supported Trump’s presence and that the incident was not an insult to the memories of the fallen soldiers.
