Kamala Harris is set to make her first major television appearance as the Democratic presidential nominee on Thursday night, but she will not be alone. In a joint interview with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Harris will sit down with CNN’s Dana Bash for a prime-time discussion at 9:00 PM EDT (2:00 AM BST). This appearance, just days shy of her commitment to hold a significant interview by the end of the month, has drawn both praise and criticism.

The decision to feature both Harris and Walz in the interview may address some of the scrutiny Harris has faced since securing the nomination. Critics argue that having Walz present might be a strategy to mitigate the pressures of a solo interview. Scott Jennings, a former special assistant to President George W. Bush, criticized the move as a sign of Harris’s “lack of confidence” and labeled it “weak sauce.”

In contrast, supporters view the joint appearance as a strategic choice given the unique circumstances of Harris’s candidacy, following President Joe Biden’s unexpected withdrawal from the race. Peter Giangreco, a Democratic strategist, defended the decision, suggesting it aligns with a well-paced campaign strategy: “Win the nomination, pick your nominee, lay out your economic plan, do your convention, and now do some sit-downs.”

Joint interviews are not uncommon in presidential campaigns. Historical precedents include Barack Obama and Joe Biden’s interview with “60 Minutes” in 2008, and Hillary Clinton and Tim Kaine’s joint appearance in 2016. The approach allows the candidates to present a unified front and share the burden of answering difficult questions.

Since Biden’s departure, Harris has largely engaged with the press in controlled settings. Her last in-depth interview occurred on June 24, more than two months prior. Critics, including some Republicans, have accused her of avoiding more challenging interactions with the media. Donald Trump, for instance, suggested earlier this month that Harris is avoiding unscripted discussions due to her perceived inadequacies.

Republican strategist Chip Felkel argues that Harris needs to demonstrate her ability to handle pressure, a critical skill for a presidential candidate. The joint interview with Walz could provide an opportunity to reinforce her campaign’s economic agenda, which aims to address cost-of-living concerns and provide economic security.

The effectiveness of Harris and Walz’s joint interview will be closely watched. Harris’s past interview performances have been mixed, with some high-profile interviews viewed as less successful. However, a more recent one-on-one with CNN’s Anderson Cooper saw her handling challenging questions with poise.

As Harris and Walz prepare for their joint appearance, the outcome will likely shape perceptions of her campaign’s readiness and ability to engage with both the media and voters.
