Addressing the crowd on Wednesday night, Winfrey delivered a powerful message urging voters to “choose common sense over nonsense,” rallying support for Vice-President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz.
In her impassioned speech, Winfrey called for unity and emphasized the importance of choosing “truth,” “honour,” and “joy,” framing these values as central to the American identity. Her appearance came on the third night of the four-day convention, just before Walz’s primetime speech accepting the vice-presidential nomination.
Winfrey’s return to the political arena marks a notable shift, as she has generally kept a low profile in recent years regarding political endorsements. Her comments carried a subtle critique of the Republican challengers, former President Donald Trump and Ohio Senator JD Vance.
She challenged the notion of division by emphasizing common humanity: “When a house is on fire, we don’t ask about the homeowner’s race or religion, we don’t wonder who their partner is or how they voted. No. We just try to do the best we can to save them.”
Her speech also included a pointed remark referencing Vance’s previous controversial comments about Democratic politicians. In 2021, Vance had disparaged them as “childless cat ladies,” a remark that sparked backlash and was highlighted again during Winfrey’s address. “And if the place happens to belong to a childless cat lady, well, we try to get that cat out, too,” Winfrey quipped, reflecting on the criticism surrounding Vance’s remarks.
Despite her historical involvement in politics, such as her early endorsement of Barack Obama’s presidential bid in 2007, Winfrey has been largely absent from the political limelight. Her speech at the convention was a notable exception, emphasizing her status as an Independent voter and urging others to support Democrats in the upcoming election.
The convention also featured other notable figures, including Stevie Wonder, Mindy Kaling, and Kenan Thompson, in a bid to draw attention and energize voters. The Democratic Party’s strategy includes leveraging high-profile supporters to boost visibility and appeal, in contrast to the Republican National Convention’s recent appearances by rock musician Kid Rock and wrestler Hulk Hogan.
