Paul Maslansky, Producer Behind Police Academy, Passes Away at 91
Paul Maslansky, the visionary producer responsible for launching the iconic Police Academy franchise, has passed away at the age of 91. His death was confirmed by Police Academy writer Pat Proft, who shared a heartfelt tribute on social media, remembering their time working together on the 1984 hit comedy.
“Thankful for meeting Paul Maslansky,” Proft wrote in a moving post on Facebook. “He hired me and Neal Israel to research and write Police Academy. It was the first film I ever wrote. Paul has passed away. Sally and his son… sorry for your loss. He left behind a trail of comedies. Good life.”
Maslansky’s career in Hollywood was marked by both creative vision and collaboration. He first earned an Emmy nomination in 1978 for his work on the Martin Luther King Jr. limited series, King. However, it was the runaway success of Police Academy (1984) that cemented his place in Hollywood history. The film, a raucous comedy about a group of misfit recruits at a police academy, became an instant classic. It led to six sequels and two television series—one animated, the other live-action—turning Police Academy into one of the most beloved comedy franchises of all time.
Maslansky was known not only for his producing talents but also for his ability to spot emerging talent. The original Police Academy film introduced audiences to a young Steve Guttenberg, Kim Cattrall, Bubba Smith, and other actors who went on to have lasting careers. Maslansky even made cameos throughout the series, adding a personal touch to the franchise he helped shape.
The Police Academy films, with their slapstick humor and memorable characters, continue to be a staple of 80s and 90s pop culture, and Maslansky’s legacy lives on through the laughter his work continues to inspire.
As the entertainment world mourns his passing, many will remember Maslansky not only for his remarkable contributions to comedy but also for his ability to bring people together through laughter. His family, including his wife, Sally, and son, survive him.
Paul Maslansky’s legacy will forever be tied to the Police Academy films, a testament to his dedication to making audiences laugh—and keeping them laughing—for decades.
