In a groundbreaking move to fuel its artificial intelligence ambitions, Google has teamed up with innovative startup Kairos Power to harness the power of small nuclear reactors. This exciting deal aims to construct seven compact reactors, each capable of generating 500 megawatts of clean energy. The first reactor is set to come online by 2030, with subsequent ones following in the years ahead.
Michael Terrell, Google’s Senior Director of Energy and Climate, emphasized the urgency for new electricity sources. He stated, “The grid needs innovative solutions to support AI technologies that are transforming scientific research, enhancing business services, and driving national competitiveness.” This partnership represents a significant step toward meeting energy demands sustainably and unlocking AI’s full potential.
The tech giants are not alone in their nuclear pursuits. Microsoft recently signed a deal to revive a decommissioned reactor at Three Mile Island, ensuring a stable power supply for the next two decades. Similarly, Amazon has acquired a data center campus in Pennsylvania, powered by a nearby nuclear plant. As data centers currently consume about 3% of global electricity—a figure projected to soar with the AI boom—these companies are seeking reliable energy sources to keep pace.
Small modular reactors (SMRs) are gaining traction as a more efficient and faster alternative to traditional nuclear power plants. Although still in the early stages of development—only three SMRs are operational worldwide in Russia, China, and India—this technology promises to revolutionize the energy landscape.
Kairos Power CEO Mike Laufer expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, noting that Google’s involvement will help the company “advance quickly down the learning curve.” He added, “By collaborating from the development phase, Google is more than just a customer; they are a partner who truly understands our innovative vision and the potential it holds.”
