Huawei’s latest innovation, the Mate XT—a pioneering tri-foldable smartphone—has stirred a wave of national pride in China. Unveiled just hours after Apple launched its AI-enhanced iPhone 16 lineup, the Mate XT is being celebrated on Chinese social media as a symbol of technological prowess and resilience against U.S. sanctions. However, the phone’s steep price of $2,800 has sparked significant criticism among potential buyers.

The Mate XT, set to hit the Chinese market on September 20, is lauded as the world’s first tri-foldable phone. This groundbreaking device comes as Huawei aims to reassert its dominance in the high-end smartphone sector despite ongoing trade restrictions imposed by the United States. The unveiling of the Mate XT follows Huawei’s previous successes with the Mate 60 series and Pura series phones, which are noted for their use of domestically produced semiconductors—a strategic move in response to U.S. sanctions that have restricted access to advanced American technology.

The release of the Mate XT has been met with fervent enthusiasm from Huawei supporters. Social media platforms like Weibo have been abuzz with nationalistic fervor, with many users viewing the launch as a triumph over U.S. trade restrictions. One Weibo user remarked, “Apple hasn’t fallen, but Huawei has truly risen again,” while another declared, “Times are changing. U.S. sanctions have been in vain.” A video showing Apple store employees in China watching the Mate XT launch also became a trending topic, reflecting the intense interest in Huawei’s new offering.

Despite the patriotic excitement, the Mate XT’s price point has been a major source of contention. With a starting price of 19,999 yuan ($2,800) and higher-end models costing up to 23,999 yuan ($3,300), the phone is considered prohibitively expensive for many consumers. This pricing has been criticized as insensitive, especially in light of China’s current economic challenges and widespread financial insecurity among ordinary citizens.

A recent Weibo poll revealed that only a small fraction of respondents are considering purchasing the Mate XT. Out of approximately 9,200 participants, fewer than 1,000 indicated they would buy the phone, while over 4,700 cited the high cost as a deterrent. One Huawei fan, identified only as Xu, expressed frustration at the pricing, saying, “No matter how much I like the product, the price tag just sounds crazy to me. Maybe Huawei isn’t really targeting people like me.”

The Mate XT’s introduction underscores Huawei’s ongoing efforts to push the envelope in smartphone innovation while navigating the complexities of geopolitical tensions and economic realities. As the tech giant continues to adapt to the evolving landscape, the market’s reaction to the Mate XT will be closely watched.
