The research, led by Dr. Deanna Davy and Professor Sam Lunarian, reveals how malicious actors are exploiting artificial intelligence to create and disseminate disturbing content.
The study analyzed dark web forums over the past year, uncovering that these platforms have become hubs for offenders to learn and share techniques for generating AI-based child exploitation images. Participants in these forums have been actively engaging with online guides and videos to refine their methods, demonstrating a clear intent to advance their capabilities in this illicit field.
Forum discussions also indicate that offenders are using existing non-AI content as a foundation to enhance their AI-generated material. Some members of these communities have referred to the creators of such imagery as “artists,” reflecting a perverse normalization of their activities. Additionally, there are hopes expressed within these forums that AI technology will continue to evolve, making it even easier to produce such material.
Dr. Davy emphasized that AI-generated child sexual abuse material is a “rapidly growing problem” that requires urgent attention. “We need to understand a great deal more about precisely how offenders are creating it, how widely it is being shared, and the impact it is having on offender pathways,” she stated. The study also debunked the misconception that AI-generated images are “victimless,” highlighting that many offenders are manipulating real images of children to create these disturbing materials. The study noted a troubling trend toward the escalation of imagery from “softcore” to “hardcore.”
