Tom Daley, the former Olympic diving gold medalist and Britain’s most decorated diver, has announced his retirement from competitive diving. The 30-year-old athlete made the announcement during an interview with British Vogue, revealing that the decision to retire following the Paris Games felt like “the right time.”

Daley’s illustrious career includes five Olympic medals, showcasing his dominance in the sport over the years. He won gold in the men’s synchronized 10m platform at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and recently secured silver in the same event at the Paris Games. Daley first gained Olympic recognition in 2008 at the Beijing Games, competing at just 14 years old.

Reflecting on his decision, Daley shared, “I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It’s the right time to call it a day.” Despite initially retiring after his Tokyo success, Daley made a return for the Paris Olympics to compete in front of his family, a decision influenced by his young son, Robbie.

Daley’s return to competitive diving was marked by emotional moments, including his role as the British flag bearer at the Paris opening ceremony, fulfilling a childhood dream. “There was a lot of pressure and expectations. I was eager for it to be done,” Daley admitted, adding that seeing his family in the audience made the experience profoundly meaningful.

As Daley steps away from the sport, he looks forward to spending more time with his family and embracing a more normal life. “This year felt like such a bonus. I got to compete in front of my family, my kids. I got to be flag bearer. So yeah, bucket list ticked off on every occasion,” Daley concluded.

With his retirement, Daley leaves behind a legacy of excellence and dedication, closing a significant chapter in British diving history.
